Moving Home: The Biggest Adventure Yet

This one time, in Hong Kong….

It’s the sentence I dread slipping out. I don’t feel ashamed or embarrassed about my time spent living in Hong Kong but having moved back after three years away, I’m conscious of sounding like one of those friends who lived abroad and ‘found themselves’. But as I approach the three month mark of being back home, Hong Kong is slipping away and I’m not entirely convinced that I’ve taken time to think about what that means.

Trans-Siberian: Hong Kong to Beijing

Friday 15th April 2016

Location: Hong Kong

After months of deliberation, preparation and research, it’s finally time for me to leave my home of the past three years and start my travels back to dear old Blighty. Saying goodbye to Hong Kong was one of the most difficult things I have ever done and while I feel sad, I’m certain that the reality of it hasn’t quite hit home yet. I feel sorry for whoever has to deal with that when it sinks in at some point over the next few weeks.

Getting Trans-Siberian Visas

So it turns out getting visas for the Trans-Siberian, East to West, when you’re a British citizen in Hong Kong is a little awkward. For my trip I need a Russian tourist visa and transit visas for China and Belarus. Here’s how I obtained them with a little (read ridiculously big) help from Real Russia and CIS Tour.

Thinking about Goodbyes

The final countdown is underway. I’ve got one week left at work and six weeks, to the day, until I leave Hong Kong. I’m feeling a lot of mixed emotions about it. I’m very excited for my long journey home, being reunited with friends and family, cheap cheese, long summer nights, but I’m scared of what I’m leaving behind… friends, a boyfriend, an incredible city and the best three years of my life.

Taking the long way home

My major life decisions have always been a little impulsive. I moved to Hong Kong with two weeks notice and then stayed ‘just one more year’ three times. I’ve been getting itchy feet for a while and, call it a gut feeling, I’ve started to feel the need to move on. I want to take some time at home to recuperate and reflect, to figure out what on earth is next. Since last summer I’ve had an idea at the back of my head but it took a bad day at work and a glass of wine to suddenly go out on a whim and book it. So, dear readers, in two months time I shall be heading back to dear old Blighty by train.

Staycationing in Hong Kong for the holidays

Kung Hei Fat Choy!

I can’t believe it’s my third Chinese New Year in Asia. Partly through lack of learning centre holidays and partly through choice, I’ve actually spent my first one in the city. I was a little apprehensive at first as all of my friends were booked to jet off to foreign lands and I was worried I would be craving the Thailand beaches I’ve spent the last two CNY festivities on. Turns out, I had a pretty awesome time.

Photographing Hong Kong

Recently I was hired to be a City Correspondent for Hong Kong. It’s been an interesting job and a great opportunity to get back into travel writing and photography. I’ve been walking all over Hong Kong to review hotels, restaurants and attractions and I’ve seen angles of the city that I’ve never seen before.

Riding the Rickshaw

As I mentioned before, my friends and I have been planning surprise activities for each other in the run up to our favourite couple leaving. This week it was the final round and my turn, so the pressure was on. I decided to make us tourists for the night and organise doing something we said we’d always do… the Rickshaw Bus.

Rainbow Seafood Restaurant, Lamma Island

The past few months have been difficult as we reach the time of year when people start coming and going. A few of my best friends have been leaving and, unfortunately, my favourite fivesome is about to become three. Two of our besties are setting sail for the States and we’re making the most of the time before they go.
